How to Mine Bitcoins With Video Cards

We all know that mining is unprofitable for common people. It’s become a kind of big deal which can’t be afforded by PC-users. Though it wasn’t like this all the time. Most users know about GPU as an equipment which helps computers cope with cool games. It’s true, but at the same time GPU is also a very efficient tool for the speedy mining of bitcoins. So, let’s look at how it was in the beginning.

How it Was

Few years ago, when Bitcoins just started, people had a chance to mine bitcoins on their own computers using their own processors. It was quite effective for a while, and then speeds were on the rise. Someone decided to take a GPU and use it for mining. Wasn’t CPU enough? Certainly not; faster mining hardware or graphic card is able to do more attempts per second to win this game of Bitcoin. So that’s why they needed more.

Graphic Processing Units are usually used for games. Games consume a lot of a computer’s capacity, and needs more speed. Consequently, they began to use GPU for mining, because it gave them much more speed and efficiency.

So, miners were collecting more coins than those who were still using PC’s processors. At the same time, a Graphic Processing Unit wasn’t very expensive; and most users could afford to buy one. So, Bitcoin-mining’s evolution had taken a step forward.

Graphic Processing Unit’s Era

It’s not difficult to explain why graphic cards became so popular. The answer is efficiency. A computer’s processor or CPU (central processing unit) is developed to be an executor of all software and programs on a computer. At the same time, the GPU helps the computer with video or visual effects like video or games. It is quite obvious, because games are definitely speed hungry and require high productivity from the computer. You may observe the work of GPU’s when you see graphical effects or animations on your desktop, or when you watch a video on your computer.

That is the reason why GPU became a good alternative to the central processing unit inside a computer’s box. Computers have their own Integrated Graphics Processors, but they are not so effective and fast. Consequently, Graphic Processing Units became the best choice for mining due to high speed and good efficiency.

So what was it like? First of all, a miner had to install a Bitcoin-client software for mining. Then the miner sets up the settings and begins to mine with graphic cards. The process consumed a huge amount of energy, but the return was high as well. A miner got his bitcoins on the wallet and could spend them on the Internet or just keep for a while.

Firstly, you could acquire a pair of graphic cards, set them up on your computer, and start mining. Your problem-solving speed would be quite good for noticeable earnings in bitcoins. How to Mine Bitcoins With a GPU Using CGMiner

With their recent jump in value Bitcoins are becoming more popular than ever. This sudden increase in popularity has created a gold rush causing everyone to gain interest in this new digital currency.

While many people find it easier to simply buy Bitcoins others have discovered Bitcoin mining is a fun and challenging hobby.

Mining for Bitcoins can be both fun, and profitable and it's actually easier to get started then you might think. In this hub I'll explain how to start mining for Bitcoins using your GPU and a program called CGMiner.

Hardware Requirements

AMD Radeon video cards are the best GPUs for mining Bitcoins. Unfortunately Nvidia cards do not perform very well at all when it comes to mining when compared to AMD cards.

If you already have an AMD Radeon 5800 or newer video card installed then you are in good shape to start mining for coins.

I wouldn't recommend going out and purchasing a new video card just to mine Bitcoins with but if you need to replace an older card anyway you might consider purchasing a Radeon card instead of Nvidia Hardware..

With newer ASIC based Bitcoin miners hitting the market in the near future GPU based mining may soon be obsolete so be cautious of investing heavily in GPU hardware just for mining.

Why MIne Using a GPU?

GPUs are much better than CPUs when it comes to mining for Bitcoins due to the nature of their design. Graphics rendering requires tons of mathematical computations which GPUs are specifically designed to do.

Since Bitcoin mining also requires math computations (hashing) GPUs work very well for this purpose.

While CPUs can also be used to generate hashes they are not nearly as effective as a GPU.

Here is a popular analogy:

A CPU is like a small group of very smart people who can quickly perform any task they are asked to do.

A GPU is like a large group of dumb people who on their own are not very fast or intelligent, but they can be taught to do repetitive tasks, and as a group they can be more productive due to the sheer number of them.

Create an Online Bitcoin Wallet

Before you start mining for Bitcoins you will need to create an online wallet that will be used to receive and store Bitcoins.

There are several places to create online wallets but I recommend using Blockchain. Blockchain allows you to create a free, and secure wallet that provides many useful features.

To create a wallet click on the link labeled 'Create my free wallet'. To set up the new account enter an alias (think of this as the username for the account), a secure password, and the capcha answer.

Blockchain will generate a password recovery mnemonic, be sure to store this somewhere safe in case you ever need to recover access to your wallet.

It's important to use a very secure password for the wallet. If anyone were to gain access to your wallet they could quickly steal all of the coins inside.

Find Your Bitcoin Wallet Address

After creating the account log into the wallet using the identifier and password. The address of the wallet can be found on the main wallet home tab.

The address consists of 27-34 alphanumeric characters. This address is what you will provide to people so they can send you payments using Bitcoins.

Join a Bitcoin Mining Pool

While it is possible to mine for Bitcoins on your own it is not something I would recommend doing. Solo mining requires an incredible amount of processing power which most people don't have access to.

Pooled mining allows miners to group up to solve blocks and earn Bitcoins together. Each miner that joins the pool earns shares for the work they contribute.

Each time the pool finds a block (currently worth 25 BTC) the Bitcoins earned are divided among the users in the pool based on how many shares they earned in the particular round.

There are many different mining pools you can join, each pool has their on pros and cons. As you learn more about Bitcoins you will be able to make a more educated decision of which pool is best for you.

I recommend joining the Eclipse Mining Consortium because it has some great features and is easy to use.

Creating an Account at EclipseMC

The process for joining most Bitcoin mining pools is very similar but in this guide I'll show you how to start mining with EclipseMC.

The first step in joining the pool is to register for a new account.

Add Your Bitcoin Wallet Address to Your Pool Account

After registering with EclipseMC log into your account and enter your Bitcoin wallet address into the account settings section. As you earn Bitcoins for the work you contribute to the mining pool EclipseMC will automatically send payments to your wallet.

Eclipse allows you to adjust the auto payment threshold to an amount you decide. The minimum payout is currently .02 BTC. If you prefer to receive less frequent , but larger payments you can increase the amount.

I prefer to keep my auto payment set to .1 BTC but it is mostly a matter of personal preference. Be careful not to set the amount to high in case something were to happen to the pool in which case you could potentially lose your unpaid earnings.

Creating a Worker

Next you need to setup a worker, click on the 'My Workers' tab at the top of your account. You will need one worker account for each copy of CGMiner you intend to run.

Set a name, and a password to use for the worker. The notify field is the number of minutes a worker has to be offline for before a notification is sent to you.

If you have measured the power draw and know your cost per kilowatt of electricity you can also enter it for the worker and Eclipse will generate some useful statistics regarding profitability of the miner.

If a worker requires more money to operate due to power costs than it earns then you may want to disable the worker.

Download and Configure CGMiner

At this point you should have a Bitcoin wallet which is now associated with the Eclipse mining pool. Which means you are finally ready to start actually mining for Bitcoins!

There are several different Bitcoin mining clients available but I will be showing you how to use CGMiner.

CGMiner is a GPU/FPGA bitcoin mining program written in C. It is compatible with both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Among the great features of CGMiner are support for overclocking, hardware monitoring, fan speed control and also remote interface capabilities.

To get started with CGMiner download the latest version of the application.

Currently the latest version is 2.11.4 so Windows users should download cgminer-2.11.4-windows.zip.

Extract the Contents of the Zipfile

After downloading the compressed zip file open the archive. Inside the archive you'll find a folder called cgminer-2.4.11-windows. Move this folder to C:\ and rename it to cgminer.

You should end up a with a folder called c:\cgminer , the contents should like like the image below.

Create a Batch File to Launch CGMiner

Since CGMiner is a command line utility the best way to launch the application with the appropriate settings is to create a batch file.

The simplest way to create a batch file is by using Notepad in Windows. Open notepad and paste in the command below, change the username and password to match the one you created in the EclipseMC account settings..

start /D "c:\cgminer\" cgminer.exe -o http://us2.eclipsemc.com:8337 -u accountname_worker -p password -d 0 --auto-fan --gpu-memclock 300

If you have two video cards in your computer add '-d 1' to the command.

start /D "c:\cgminer\" cgminer.exe -o http://us2.eclipsemc.com:8337 -u accountname_worker -p password -d 0 -d 1--auto-fan --gpu-memclock 300

Save the Batch File

After you've modified the command line to suit your needs save the file using a .bat extension, this will allow the file to be executable.

Make sure you set the 'save as type' to 'all files' otherwise you could end up with a .txt file instead of a batch file.

You can save the batch file at any location you want, I placed mine on the desktop so it can be easily accessed.

Launching CGMiner

Once the batch file is in place you are ready to start mining for Bitcoins using CGMiner. Double click on the batch file to start the miner.

If you're batch file works CGMiner launch, connect to the mining pool, and start mining for Bitcoins.

Each of the GPUs detected by CGMiner will be lised in the second section below the summary. The current hash rate for each card will be displayed in Mh/s (Mega hashes per second).

As you can see below my pair of ATI Radeon 5800 cards are generating a total of about 700MH/s.

Troubleshooting CGMiner

If you're unable to get CGMiner working here are some common things you should check first.

  • Install the latest version of the video card drivers
  • Try launching cgminer from the command prompt instead of the batch file to check for error messages.
  • Double check the worker name and password entered in the batch file. EclipseMC workers will usually be similar to accountname_workername but don't forget to include the portion before the underscore.

Checking the Worker Stats in the Mining Pool

Once CGMiner starts mining for Bitcoins you can check the status of the worker in the mining pool web interface. Most pools take somewhere between 5-15 minutes before they will start showing statistics for the worker online.

If CGMiner was able to successfully connect to the pool you will see the current speed and an estimate of the workers profitability per day.

If you do not see any stats after the miner has been running for a while check the username and password you used in the batch file.

Mining Bitcoin with a GPU in 2018

Well it’s a new year!  Happy 2018 to all of our readers! 2018 brings a lot of unknowns and a lot of uncertainty. And right in the middle of all of that uncertainty is Bitcoin in all of its weird and crazy glory.  People are mining bitcoins like mad. Hardware is in such demand that the supply of Antminer ASIC mining hardware is at an all time high reaching more than double it’s asking price in just two months. And to top if off, price scalpers on eBay and Amazon are selling the Antminer S9 for almost $10,000 to people who are being driven by hype (note: At $10,000 the Antminer is not a good deal if profit is your motivation). This has brought back a rush of people asking the question: Is mining bitcoin with a GPU something to consider at these insane ASIC prices? Let’s explore this conundrum and find out. The facts might surprise you!

Mining is a funny term. You’re not really “mining” bitcoin in actuality. Bitcoin (and other cryptocurrencies) are based on a technology called Blockchain. Blockchain allows for a public ledger of transactions that are secure and safe from hacking. Miners are simply people or businesses who contribute the processing power of computers to the blockchain network, generally through a mining pool.  This compute power could be CPU, GPU, FPGA, or ASIC based. Indeed in the early days of Bitcoin, mining was exclusively CPU based with GPUs following not too far behind. In those early days it was even possible to mine Bitcoins with computers as small as a Raspberry Pi. As the network grew and the difficulty rose, miners quickly moved to mining Bitcoin with a GPU.

The progression of Bitcoin Mining went like this:

  • CPU Mining  – The base standard which everything began
  • GPU Mining – A single GPU today is roughly equal to 30 CPUs
  • ASIC Mining – A single ASIC miner today is roughly equal to 400 GPUs (12,000 CPUs)

As you can see over time mining power has increased exponentially. An ASIC based miner which costs roughly $2500 today can perform the work of 12,000 PCs which would cost $18 million dollars. The ASIC miner makes far more sense.

How the Bitcoin Network Size Effects your Miner

It’s super important before we go any further with a discussion of mining Bitcoin with a GPU that we stop and understand how the network size affects mining.

Some are likely to think with more miners on the network more Bitcoins will be mined.  This is indeed false.  Bitcoin is released at the same rate regardless of network size. Bitcoin has a fixed supply and fixed schedule that is followed. When Bitcoin mining first began, Bitcoins were released at a rate of 50 coins every ten minutes. 50 coins would be released whether there were 10 people mining or 10 million people mining.

Today, just 12.5 Bitcoins are released every ten minutes, but the number of miners has increased 10,000%.  To put this in perspective, if ASIC mining were nor a thing there would be ~25 billion CPUs mining Bitcoin today.  That’s insanity!  So 25 billion CPUs mining only 12.5 bitcoins per ten minutes. Are you ready to put this in perspective? With your desktop PC mining only with your CPU you are 200 times more likely to hit the lottery in your state than you are to ever find a Bitcoin.

Fantastic, but mining Bitcoin with a GPU has to blow that away right? I mean you can put six GPUs in a computer and get the Bitcoin mining equivalent of 180 CPUs.  That will dramatically increase my odds. It sure will! You’ve now leveled the playing field!  Your just as likely to win your local state lottery as you are to find a Bitcoin.  See the problem?  To find a Bitcoin you need a LOT more processing power.

What about Mining Pools though Mike?

Some of you more familiar with mining are saying “Wait a minute Mike, no one solo mines. I don’t need enough power to find a coin on my own!  I’ll just mine in a pool and share the rewards.”

This again might sound like the way to go at first.  Just toss all of your GPUs into a local mining pool and share the rewards based on the percentage of work your miner submitted.. Mining with a GPU just became profitable again! Well, not so fast.  Let’s look at the numbers.

With a GTX 1060 GPU you’ll be capable of about 20 MH/s Bitcoin hashrate. As part of mining pool, your GPU would bring in about $.000112 a day of revenue. The 1060 uses about 95 watts of electricity.  With an average electrical cost of 10 cents per kwh.  Your total electricity spend would be $6.84 a month. This quite literally puts you $6.84 in the hole every single month.

Let’s face it. Mining Bitcoin with a GPU is not profitable in 2018.  Can we stop the madness now?

How to set up a bitcoin miner

There are three main categories of bitcoin mining hardware, each more expensive and more powerful than the last. This guide to setting up a bitcoin miner explains each of them, and talks about how to make them work.

By this stage, you will understand how bitcoin works, and what mining means. But we need to get from theory to practice. How can you set up a bitcoin mining hardware and start generating some digital cash? The first thing you're going to need to do is decide on your hardware, and there are two main things to think about when choosing it:

Hash rate

This is the number of calculations that your hardware can perform every second as it tries to crack the mathematical problem we described in our mining section. Hash rates are measured in megahashes, gigahashes, and terahashes per second (MH/sec, GH/sec, and TH/sec. The higher your hash rate (compared to the current average hash rate), the more likely you are to solve a transaction block. The bitcoin wiki’s mining hardware comparison page is a good place to go for rough information on hash rates for different hardware.

Energy consumption

All this computing power chews up electricity, and that costs money. It's worth looking at your hardware's energy consumption in watts, when making your choice. You want to make sure that you don't end up spending all of your money on electricity to mine coins that won't be worth what you paid.

Use these two factors to work out how many hashes you’re getting for every watt of electricity that you use. To do this, divide the hash count by the number of watts.

For example, if you have a 500 GH/sec device, and it’s taking 400 watts of power, then you’re getting 1.25 GH/sec per watt. You can check your power bill or use an electricity price calculator online to find out how much that means in hard cash.

However, there’s a caveat here. In some cases, you’ll be using your computer to run the mining hardware. Your computer has its own electricity draw on top of the mining hardware, and you’ll need to factor that into your calculation.

Bitcoin Mining Hardware

You can buy GPUs from two main vendors: ATI and Nvidia. High-end cards can cost hundreds of dollars, but also give you a significant advantage over CPU hashing. For example, an ATI 5970 graphics card can give you over 800 MH/sec compared with a CPU, which will generally give you less than 10 MH/sec.

One of the nice things about GPUs is that they also leave your options open. Unlike other options discussed later, these units can be used with cryptocurrencies other than bitcoin. Litecoin, for example, uses a different proof of work algorithm to bitcoin, called Scrypt. This has been optimized to be friendly to CPUs and GPUs, making them a good option for GPU miners who want to switch between different currencies.

GPU mining is largely dead these days. Bitcoin mining difficulty has accelerated so much with the release of ASIC mining power that graphics cards can't compete. If you do want to use them, you'd best equip yourself with a motherboard that can take multiple boards, to save on running separate PSUs for different boards.

FPGA Bitcoin Mining

A Field Programmable Gate Array is an integrated circuit designed to be configured after being built. This enables a mining hardware manufacturer to buy the chips in volume, and then customize them for bitcoin mining before putting them into their own equipment. Because they are customized for mining, they offer performance improvements over CPUs and GPUs. Single-chip FPGAs have been seen operating at around 750 Megahashes/sec, although that’s at the high end. It is of course possible to put more than one chip in a box.

ASIC Bitcoin Miners

This is where the action’s really at. Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are specifically designed to do just one thing: mine bitcoins at mind-crushing speeds, with relatively low power consumption. Because these chips have to be designed specifically for that task and then fabricated, they are expensive and time-consuming to produce - but the speeds are stunning. At the time of writing, units are selling with speeds anywhere from 5-500 Gigahashes/sec (although actually getting some of them to them to ship has been a problem). Vendors are already promising ASIC devices with far more power, stretching up into the 2 Terahashes/sec range.

Calculate mining profitability

Before making your purchase, calculate the projected profitability of your miner, using the excellent mining profitability calculator from The Genesis Block or this one. You can input parameters such as equipment cost, hash rate, power consumption, and the current bitcoin price to see how long it will take to pay back your investment.

One of the other key parameters here is network difficulty. This metric determines how hard it is to solve transaction blocks, and it varies according to the network hash rate. Difficulty is likely to increase substantially as ASIC devices come on the market, so it might be worth increasing this metric in the calculator to see what your return on investment will be like as more people join the game. Download the software

Depending on which equipment you choose, you will need to run software to make use of it. Typically when using GPUs and FPGAs, you will need a host computer running two things: the standard bitcoin client, and the mining software.

This software connects your computer to the network and enables it to interact with the bitcoin clients, forwarding transactions and keeping track of the block chain. It will take some time for it to download the entire bitcoin block chain so that it can begin. The bitcoin client effectively relays information between your miner and the bitcoin network.

The bitcoin mining software is what instructs the hardware to do the hard work, passing through transaction blocks for it to solve. There are a variety of these available, depending on your operating system. They are available for Windows, Mac OS X, and others.

You may well need mining software for your ASIC miner, too, although some newer models promise to ship with everything pre-configured, including a bitcoin address, so that all you need to do is plug it in the wall.

One smart developer even produced a mining operating system designed to run on the Raspberry Pi, a low-cost credit card-sized Linux computer designed to consume very small amounts of power. This could be used to power a USB-connected ASIC miner.
